In 1919, a widowed schoolmistress returns to a Northumberland mining village to settle her brother’s estate and finds the place changed by war, grief and old resentments. When she discovers that the local school is due to close, she is drawn into a struggle over who gets to decide a community’s future, and what survival costs. The novel follows her as she is forced to choose between leaving quietly and standing up in a village that has never forgiven her for leaving in the first place.
