First draft
In post-war Leeds, a quiet clerk in a private lending library discovers that a set of missing catalogue cards points to more than misfiled books. As she follows the gaps through the city’s bookshops, back rooms and damp terraces, she is drawn into a story about grief, reinvention and the small acts that decide what survives. The novel moves between the physical labour of keeping a library alive and the private damage its staff have learned to hide.
