When sixteen-year-old Mara Vale starts hearing books whisper back from the closed stacks of a failing city library, she discovers the building is keeping a record of every promise ever made inside it. The library’s oldest ward is breaking, and the only way to mend it is to find the person who broke a vow there years ago, before the whole place forgets how to keep its doors open. Mara has to decide whether saving the library means telling the truth about her own family’s part in its decline.
