In the winter of 1813, a Northumberland customs clerk is sent to trace a string of disappearances along the coast between Newcastle and Berwick. What begins as an inquiry into smuggling turns into a race to uncover who is moving people as well as contraband through the old salt roads. The farther she follows the trail, the more she has to decide how much truth a respectable life can survive.
