When Sarah Murphy, a transcript editor in Edinburgh, begins finding altered notes and missing pages among the papers of a dead memoirist, she realises someone has been rewriting the story of a disappearance that was never properly solved. Each version of events points to a different suspect, but the deeper Mairi looks, the less certain she becomes about what she remembers from the night her own sister vanished.
