In a city built over old burial tunnels, a paper conservator begins finding names in the margins of damaged books that match the dead. Each name leads her deeper into a buried network of oath-sites, where the city’s neat history has been propping up something far older and less interested in being forgotten. The trouble, as ever, is that books remember things people would rather leave buried.
