When Mara Vale returns to her late aunt’s house on the edge of the Cotswolds, she finds rooms that hold their own weather: rain in the hallway, frost in the pantry, a summer heat that will not leave the attic. The house is scheduled for sale, but the longer Mara stays, the more it seems to be preserving something her family has spent years trying not to remember.
