When a provincial mapmaker discovers that the old imperial roads are changing shape overnight, she is pulled into a journey across a borderland where every settlement has its own version of the past. To stop a slow, spreading collapse in the routes that keep the realm connected, she has to work with smugglers, surveyors and one deeply inconvenient border guard. The book leans on travel, practical magic and the awkward fact that nobody in the party agrees on what the landscape is supposed to mean.
