Behind the stories
Emily Briggs is a crime writer interested in how stories work, how readers respond to them and how technology is changing the way writers create and publish.
A story does not need to explain everything to know what it means.

First draft
When a Sheffield bookshop owner starts finding anonymous corrections slipped into rare paperbacks, she assumes it is a prank until one of the marked-up books leads her to a missing local journalist. The search pulls her into a small, tidy-looking world of collectors, publishers and private grudges, where everyone seems to know more about the city than they admit. As the notes become more threatening, she has to decide whether the truth is worth exposing a life built around keeping things in order.
