Behind the stories
Ellis Rowan writes fantasy shaped by atmosphere, folklore and characters who rarely get the easy choice. Most stories begin with a place: an abandoned road, an old house, a forgotten woodland or somewhere that feels as though it remembers the people who passed through it. Ellis is particularly interested in the moment ordinary lives collide with something impossible.
A good story should leave a door open in your head long after you finish reading it.

First draft
After the death of her aunt, a mapmaker returns to a half-ruined house on the edge of the marsh and finds that its rooms do not stay where they should. The local folklore says the house was built to keep something out, but the deeper truth is that it was also built to keep something in. As the fen rises and the walls begin to remember, she must decide what to seal away and what to let step into the dark.
