In a near-future London, a municipal library begins returning books with passages quietly altered, as if the city is revising its own memory. Mara Vale, a cataloguer who notices patterns other people miss, follows the changes into a hidden system that rewards compliance and erases inconvenient versions of the past. As the revisions spread beyond the library, she has to decide whether preserving the record is worth becoming part of the error.
