First draft
Seventeen-year-old Mara Ellis works after school in a failing independent bookshop and knows exactly how to keep the place running, right up until a missing paperback ledger starts exposing the shop's debts, half-finished orders and one very inconvenient lie. As the shop edges toward closure, Mara has to decide whether saving it means telling the truth about what has been hidden inside it for months. The only person who seems able to help is the boy she has been avoiding since he turned up asking for a book that was never meant to be sold.
