When a small Inverness lending library begins finding overdue books returned with odd handwritten notes tucked inside them, the volunteer who runs the desk realises someone is using the circulation system to pass messages. A local bookbinder with a talent for noticing what people miss gets drawn into the puzzle after a regular reader vanishes and the notes start pointing toward a death that was never properly examined.
