Set in Newcastle in the winter after a catastrophic shipyard fire, the novel follows a widowed pattern-maker who is asked to identify the dead, then quietly discovers the official story is tidier than the truth. As she moves between the yard, the river, and a house full of people who prefer silence, she has to decide what loyalty costs when it is built on omission.
