First draft
After her father dies, Morag Kerr returns to a failing family bookshop in Inverness and finds that the place is full of unsorted stock, half-kept promises and one missing ledger that seems to account for more than books. As she tries to decide whether to save the shop or sell it, old family loyalties and a local dispute over the building’s future force her to look at what she has been preserving, and what she has been avoiding.
