When a meticulous fiction editor returns to Durham to help clear out her late aunt’s house, she finds an unfinished manuscript hidden among the papers. The author is her old university rival, now a weary local bookseller trying to keep his shop afloat, and finishing the book means working closely with the man she has spent years trying not to think about. As the manuscript changes shape, so does the version of their history they have both been living with.
