In a border city built around a sealed gate to the dead, a practical archivist is forced to work with the gatekeeper she has spent years distrusting. When the seal begins to fail, they have to trace the old wards through half-forgotten records, political lies and inconvenient feelings neither of them has time for. The book leans on atmosphere, broken history and the awkward fact that saving a city rarely happens cleanly.
