David Nash is a horror writer interested in how stories work, how readers respond to them and how technology is changing the way writers create and publish.
A book is made from hundreds of decisions nobody sees.
Books and story worlds
On the writing desk
First draft
When a Liverpool bookshop starts receiving catalogues for books that have not yet been written, the staff begin to notice that every title added to the shelves seems to change the people who read it. A weary bookseller and part-time discovery writer, Mara Ellison, is drawn into the pattern when one of the phantom books appears to describe her own life with unnerving accuracy. The only way to stop the shop from becoming a mouth for something older than print is to find who is writing the catalogue, and why it wants readers more than stories.
