First draft
After his mother dies, a middle-aged proofreader returns to a half-empty house on the edge of Galway Bay to sort through her papers and decide what to do with the place before winter. What he finds instead is a set of unpaid bills, a broken family arrangement, and evidence that his mother had been quietly holding the household together by lying to everyone. As he tries to keep the house from being sold off around him, he is forced to reckon with the small deceptions that made the family work and the larger ones that may have ended it.
