Behind the stories
David Barlow writes across science fiction and space opera, with a particular interest in character, atmosphere, revision and the details that turn a manuscript into a finished book.
A story only works when somebody has something to lose.

First draft
On a failing relay station at the edge of a disputed trade route, a reluctant systems archivist discovers that the station’s sacred maintenance records are being altered to hide a slow political takeover. As rival fleets close in, she has to decide whether preserving the truth matters more than keeping the station alive. The book leans on atmosphere, bureaucracy, and the awkward practicalities of running a piece of infrastructure that everyone else wants to turn into a symbol.
