In 1817 Galway, a widowed bookseller begins copying letters for a reclusive neighbour who has lost the use of his hand and wants to settle an old family dispute before Christmas. The work draws her into his household, his past, and a practical arrangement that becomes harder to keep strictly practical with every passing week.
