First draft
After a local library in Oxford is threatened with closure, Mara Ellison takes a temporary job helping to sort its neglected archives and discovers that the building has become a quiet refuge for people who have run out of places to be. As she tries to save the library, she is also forced to reckon with the tidy version of her own life, which has been assembled from omissions and practical compromises. The novel follows the uneasy work of preserving things that are useful, damaged, and not quite replaceable.
