In 1811, a disgraced mapmaker in Oxford is drawn into a hunt for a missing survey notebook that may expose a private route through the Balkans, one useful to smugglers, soldiers and anyone willing to lie about borders. When the search pulls her from college rooms into ports, archives and a very inconvenient war, she has to decide whether a map is a record of the world or a weapon for changing it.
