When a small-town bookbinder in Penrith finds a handwritten confession hidden inside a damaged second-hand novel, she assumes it is a prank until the man named in it is found dead. The trail leads through a local paper mill, a private lending library, and a family that has spent years keeping its own records better than its own secrets. The investigation forces her to decide how much truth a quiet town can bear once it has been properly read.
