When a small Worcestershire bookshop owner is found dead after a burglary that looks badly staged, the investigation starts with missing stock and ends up circling a quiet network of favours, debts and old lies. The protagonist, a records clerk with a habit of noticing what people try to tidy away, begins to suspect the dead man was hiding something more useful than money.
