Seventeen-year-old Mara Ellison is supposed to be spending the summer before college helping her mum at the family café in Lancaster, but a missed bus leaves her stranded in a half-empty coastal town with nowhere to be for the night. While she waits for the next one, she gets pulled into a quiet friendship with a boy who is trying to disappear from his own life, and into questions about what she owes the people who have kept her safe. The longer the summer lasts, the harder it becomes to tell whether staying is the same thing as choosing.
