On the writing desk
Later first draft
In 1948 Glasgow, a junior librarian is assigned to sort the remnants of a private collection rescued from a bombed-out townhouse, only to find that one missing ledger points to a quiet theft that stretches back before the war. As she traces the books through second-hand shops, church basements and family closets, she begins to see how easily a life can be rewritten by whoever keeps the records.
