In late Victorian Winchester, a widowed copyist discovers a hidden ledger among the papers of a defunct charity office, and the names inside begin to point toward a long-buried local scandal. As she follows the paper trail through churches, counting rooms and respectable drawing rooms, she has to decide whether preserving the city’s good name matters more than telling the truth about the people it overlooked.
