First draft
When a long-shuttered library in Southampton is due to be cleared for redevelopment, archivist Mara Vale finds a hidden lending ledger tucked behind a false shelf. The names in it connect a series of local disappearances, each one quietly erased from the record as if someone has been editing the town itself. As Mara starts asking awkward questions, she realises the library may have been keeping more than books.
