Early draft
When a small Gloucester bookshop is left half-empty after its owner dies, the woman helping to sort the stock discovers a set of handwritten notes hidden inside unsold novels. As she tries to work out who wrote them and why they were never meant to be found, she is drawn into other people's quiet decisions about grief, loyalty and what gets kept when a place is changing. The book follows the awkward business of preserving a voice without turning it into a relic.
