In Winchester, a quiet clerk who catalogues old property records finds that some of the city’s missing names have not been lost at all, only hidden in the margins of a much older magical account book. When the ledger starts rewriting the lives of everyone connected to it, he has to decide whether preserving the city’s history is worth letting it keep its secrets. The deeper he digs, the more the boundary between civic paperwork and ancient enchantment begins to look uncomfortably thin.
