In 1848 Chester, a parish clerk and widower is asked to help hide a girl accused of stealing evidence that could ruin a respected magistrate. As the city shifts between old loyalties and new ideas, he is forced to choose between caution and the truth he has spent years avoiding. The book follows a small, ordinary life caught in a larger public scandal.
