When a failing second-hand bookshop in Winchester inherits a locked room no one admits existed, its new caretaker starts finding books that seem to record the private regrets of the people who open them. As the shop’s quiet corners begin to change, she realises the room is less a storage space than a way of keeping something hungry asleep. The trouble, naturally, is that the building has been waiting for someone curious enough to read the wrong thing.
