Set in Sheffield during the winter of 1893, this novel follows a widowed mill clerk who discovers that the small foundry where she works is being quietly sold off piece by piece. As old loyalties fray and a new owner pushes for efficiency over people, she has to decide what, exactly, is worth saving when a business begins to disappear. The story moves between the factory floor, the counting room and the riverbank, where the consequences of one practical decision keep widening.
