In 1848 Coventry, a widow helping to catalogue a dead solicitor’s papers discovers a ledger hidden inside the plaster of his house. The names inside it point to a quiet chain of fraud, blackmail and local ruin that reaches into the city’s respectable families, and into her own. As she follows the record, she has to decide whether truth is worth the damage it will cause.
