When Mara Vale returns to a half-ruined coastal house in Northumberland to sort her estranged aunt’s papers, she finds the place keeping its own accounts: missing objects reappearing in the wrong rooms, saltwater where there should be dust, and letters that seem to know what she has not yet admitted. The house’s history is tangled with a vanished family, a dangerous local superstition, and a pattern of disappearances that the village would rather leave buried. As the tide keeps coming in, Mara has to decide whether the house is haunted, hungry, or simply telling the truth nobody else wanted.
