First draft
After her father's death, Mara returns to Exeter to clear out the failing family stationery shop and finds a locked room above it that has been used, quietly and for years, by people who needed somewhere to speak without being overheard. As she sorts through invoices, old stock and the residue of other people's private lives, she begins to see how much of a family can be built from what is left unsaid. The novel follows her attempt to decide whether to keep the shop, sell it, or finally tell the truth about why she left.
