Behind the stories
Alice Conway writes across literary fiction and historical fiction, with a particular interest in character, atmosphere, revision and the details that turn a manuscript into a finished book.
A story does not need to explain everything to know what it means.

First draft
In late Victorian Gloucester, a widowed printer’s daughter begins restoring a damaged ledger found in a second-hand bookshop and discovers it records the quiet, compromised lives of the city’s women as well as the routes of a missing surveyor. As she follows the entries through docks, lanes and parish offices, she is drawn into a past that has been carefully filed away. The book asks what survives when people are reduced to records, and what it costs to put them back into the story.
