The Mapmaker's Oath
In the late eighteenth century, a cautious coastal surveyor is sent to chart a stretch of the Adriatic that official maps insist is already understood. He finds a chain of false coastlines, smuggled charts, and a local oath that seems to bind more people than law does. The work of correcting a map becomes awkwardly personal when the wrong version of the truth starts sinking ships.
