In 1890s Cambridge, a junior librarian discovers that a set of discreetly altered catalogue cards is being used to hide the removal of politically sensitive books from a university library. As she follows the paper trail, she uncovers a quiet network of scholars, donors and custodians protecting reputations at the expense of truth. The novel follows her attempt to decide whether preserving the library means preserving its lies.
