In late 18th-century Bristol, a widowed bookseller keeps her shop afloat by balancing accounts for men who would rather not be seen doing business with a woman. When a shipwright with debts, secrets and an inconveniently honest manner begins using her ledger as a refuge, their arrangement turns into something neither of them can afford to name. The city’s trade, gossip and old obligations keep tightening around them.
