When a small Cambridge press begins preparing a commemorative edition of a long out-of-print local history, the proof copy turns up marked with corrections that nobody remembers making. Before long, the editor handling the project is found dead, and the surviving staff discover the book itself may be pointing to an old secret buried in the press’s archives. The investigation moves through bookshops, bindery rooms and polite lies, where everyone knows something and no one quite says it straight.
