In 1893 Worcester, a widow who keeps the lending room at a working men's institute discovers that the building is scheduled for sale, along with the small world she has made out of books, order and habit. When a solicitor sent to oversee the valuation begins to see the institute as more than a line item, their practical alliance turns into something harder to dismiss.
