The Last Sound of Iron
In 1811, a disgraced naval surveyor is sent inland to map a new canal route through the Welsh borders, where old roads, private armies and a half-buried Roman fort all seem to be working against him. When the survey reveals more than waterway plans, he is forced into a race to recover a stolen dispatch before it can trigger violence between smugglers, magistrates and the men hired to keep order.
