A character reading aloud changes the room in ways a silent page never does. The words stop being private thoughts and become something other people can interrupt, misunderstand, or recognise.
That shift is often the real scene. Not the quotation itself, but what happens after it lands. Who flinches. Who pretends not to. Who hears a threat where the reader meant comfort.
It’s a useful little test for dialogue too. If a line only works on the page, maybe it isn’t finished yet.
