Some of the best research details are slightly awkward on the page. Not elegant. Not “writerly”. Just oddly specific enough that you can hear the archive in them.
That’s usually the sign to keep them.
If a detail sounds as if nobody would have invented it for style, it often earns its place. The trick is deciding whether it helps the reader see the world, or whether it’s just the manuscript showing off its paperwork. Tiny difference. Very important one.
