Worldbuilding
Public transport does a lot of quiet worldbuilding before anyone gets to the palace or the murder scene.
A city’s routes, night services and ticket rules tell you who is meant to move easily and who is expected to wait, pay extra, or simply go home early. That feels like setting to me, not background. If the tram stops running at 10.15 and the last bus requires a three-step payment ritual, the place has already shown its hand.
Useful little cruelty, really. Writers should use it.
