An audiobook isn’t just a file with a bigger production bill. Some books survive the transfer, some turn to mush the moment a human voice has to inhabit them.
That feels like the real decision for indie authors. Not whether the numbers work on paper, but whether the book has enough shape, rhythm and spoken life to justify the format at all.
Dialogue usually gives itself away first. So do paragraphs that only look elegant on the page. If the story depends on silent, visual control, audio can expose it fast. Which is rude, but useful.
