About The Severed Hand - Part Three - A Novel in Five Parts
One afternoon in Vicksburg, Mississippi, in 1929, eight-year-old Henry Longuine was playing hide-and-seek with his fraternal twin Claude in their father’s textile plant. To give his brother a scare, Henry flipped on the power to a cotton gin, unaware that Claude was hiding on top of it. The machine’s sudden rumbling caused Claude to slip, and his right arm sank into an open inspection hatch where the inner cylinder’s rotating teeth instantly chewed off his hand. Living a one-handed life embittered Claude. Family life became so disagreeable that his father privately mused that if Claude were a dog, he would put him down. Later, many would wish he had. Claude’s stump was a tangible symbol of his stolen opportunities, and his resentment curdled into a thirst for revenge. At the top of his enemies list were Henry and his father, who had allowed his two young sons to play around dangerous equipment unsupervised. Over the course of the next fifty years, Claude’s murderous quest for revenge would strike down dozens of others. This brief account does not begin to describe the interlocking experiences of the eccentric cast of characters who inhabit these pages. If you like stories that brim with unexpected twists and reversals, love affairs, betrayal, wry humor and murder, you will find these volumes a riveting read.
