There are 4 species of hominids: the dominant Stregha, descended from cats; the Allings, descended from primates; the enslaved Gaborans, descended from reptiles, and the horrid Kalugti, descended from bears. The dominant religion is Luryavan, which is structured much like the Catholic Church, except it is run entirely by females. He is at once recognized as a man of great learning and ability and is granted extensive powers by the church of Luryavan, which he uses to free the slaves.
